The Department computer administrator is Larry Oolman. To see what ‘modules’ are available: # module avail To load the environment for IDL: # module load idl To load the environment for python version 3.7: # module load python Getting Help Use of these packages require setting up your environment by using the ‘module’ command. Besides standard Red Hat software, we support a number of third party packages including IDL, Matlab, python, and NCAR software. A number of tutorials are available on the internet for using the command line interface. The Department Linux servers use Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the operating system.

See: Running Software on Department Linux servers Accessing them requires using a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Most of the Department Linux computers, including grizzly, are not visible from off campus. Accessing the Department Linux computers from off campus. If you use x2go on either platform, set the Session Type to MATE. You then display graphics using the command ‘ssh -Y’ from a terminal. From a Mac, you will need to install XQuartz. For Windows, I recommend using MobaXterm or x2go. If you wish to use graphics, you will need an X-windows environment. You can access it using ‘ssh’ from a command line terminal with either Windows or Mac. The name of the main Department server is 'grizzly'. If you need storage for large files, request disk space from the Department administrator. Please do not store large data files in this location. The ‘home’ space is shared among all Department personnel and is limited. Your ‘home’ space is available as a Windows share: \\grizzly\username or from a Mac: smb://grizzly/username, where username is again your account name.

The Department of Atmospheric Science provides substantial disk storage. In the student labs, this gets mounted on the H: drive. This is on a Windows share: \\userfiles\username\folders, where username is your account name. The University allocates a small amount of disk space (maybe 2 GB) to each student. Your disk space will be primarily in two places. Your account on these servers will have the same username and password as the University. The Department of Atmospheric Science maintains its own group of Linux servers. Computer Resources and Departmental Computing Atmospheric Science Computer Accounts
